A photo story about Ground Zero Mosque

The debate over plans of building a mosque at Ground Zero in New York City has been a hot topic lately.  I decided to walk over there myself today to take in the scene.  Click the photo below for the photostory.

A photo story about Prospect Park in Brooklyn

I took a walk through Prospect Park the other day and took a few photographs.  I decided to create a photo story out of it using TinyUploads.com and share the link with my family.  We often send pictures to each other, so this was a perfect way to share this small part of the world with them.  Enjoy the pictures.

How to make a blog like The Big Picture

If you've ever wanted to share your photos the way the Big Picture photojournalism blog does, there's an easy way to do it. Boston's Big Picture uses a large-size stream of photos that users can scroll through -- the images have captions and are unified about a story. The ease of viewing and presentation has made Big Picture an award-winning blog.

You too can do this easily with TinyUploads.com, a new photo-sharing website. TinyUploads provides a presentation that is clean and simple, allowing you to upload large-size photos, add captions, and reorder images as necessary. Here's a sample, click it and take a look:

Photos can have much more impact when shared as part of a story in context.  Try it out the next time you want to show your friends or family some pictures.

Tips on using TinyUploads

TinyUploads.com is a fast way to share photos. But here are a few tips on maximizing your use of the site.
  • Multiple simultaneous uploads - You can actually upload more than one photo at a time.  Just SHIFT or CTRL click to select more than one image when you upload.  They will queue up automatically.
  • No need to resize photos - Even if your images are very large, go ahead and upload it directly without resizing it first.  TinyUploads will resize it client-side for you (1024x1024 max).
  • Customizing embeds - If you know a little css or javascript, you can customize the appearance and behavior of the photo gallery embeds in your blog.  This is assuming you've already added the "lightbox effect" header javascript/css support files.
    • Appearance - To customize the appearance of the images, simply replace the path to the script "http://tinyuploads.com/ts_style.css" with your own style (there's a line for this in the header code).  Take a look at the source of that file to see what styles you can modify.
    • Behavior - To customize the behavior, such as how fast the images open, you can generate your own settings file and replace "http://tinyuploads.com/hs_settings.js".  TinyUploads make use of Highslide for the lightbox effects.  If you visit their site, you can generate your own settings.  With enough creativity, everything about your photo embeds can be fully customized.

Welcome to the TinyUploads Blog

TinyUploads.com is a new tool you can use to share photos with your friends and family.  You can upload photos, choose the ones you want to share, and make an online gallery with a unique URL.  Alternatively, you can get embed codes for your blog too.  TinyUploads has got some pretty cool features that I wanted to highlight.

Client-side Image Resizing - The uploader on TinyUploads will actually resize your images before uploading to about 1024x1024 dimensions, which is pretty good for website viewing.  Often times, your digital camera will output huge files from 5MB to 10MB.  That can take a very long time to upload, and many photo-uploading sites would rather just restrict your max filesize to around 2MB.  Not so with TinyUploads -- you can just upload direct from your camera.

Multiple File Uploads - TinyUploads is programmed in a way that supports multiple file uploads.  So you don't have to upload one-by-one.  Just select a batch of photos.

Mini photo galleries - The way TinyUploads works is that you can select images from your uploads to share.  That makes it easy to share 5-10 photos very easily, and more if you like.  I found that a lot of photo sharing sites don't make it easy to share "just a few" pictures.  You either have to generate a full-blown web album, or just share one image at a time.  TinyUploads is a simpler way to share.

Preserved EXIF data- EXIF data is metadata contained in your JPEGs like camera model, focal length, exposure, aperture, etc.,  This information will be preserved in your uploads, which is a plus for photographers especially who want their copyright information attached.  If someone likes your picture, they'll usually go to the EXIF data to find who the photographer was.  You can edit EXIF data in a variety of programs, with the most popular being Adobe Lightroom or Apple's Aperture.

Reorder Images - Being able to reorder images in a gallery is a necessity of photojournalistic style presentation.  By default, your images are sorted in the order that you took them.  But it helps to be able to reorder them, since you'll often want a strong opening picture and a "last impression" closing photo.

Image Preloading - TinyUploads supports preloading, so the viewing experience is smooth and fast.  When you embed in your blog, you can also use the javascript libraries that TinyUploads provides to support preloading on your site too.

Three different thumbnail sizes - You get thumbnail sizes of 160x160, 240x240, and 480x480.  You can also present the images at 1024x1024.  All of these options will help you present your photos in a beautiful way on the web.
